Choose for me Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Decide for me - Essay Example As indicated by the yearly report 1997-98 introduced by the U.S. Branch of Health and Human Services, there was a decrease in the birth rate for young people between the age of 15-19 somewhere in the range of 1991 and 1996 in all states. During this period, the general U.S. teenager birth rate fell by 12 percent, by 12 percent or more in 28 states, by 16 percent or more in 13 states, though, decrease in 4 states surpassed 20 percent. In spite of the fact that the figures show that there has been an improvement in high schooler birth rate yet it’s still an issue which is making a great deal of issues for the youthful moms, the legislature just as the general public. Young childbearing is related with genuine wellbeing dangers. Youthful moms, particularly who are under 15 years old have a higher pace of birth difficulties including sickliness, hypertension, delayed or untimely work, pregnancy related diseases and unusual draining and so forth. There are more prominent odds of having a low birth weight and neonatal passing rate, which implies that the newborn child kicks the bucket inside 28 days of the birth, when contrasted with grown-up pregnant ladies. Other clinical issues related with adolescent moms are poor maternal weight increase, untimely birth and they are additionally progressively inclined to contracting Sexually Transmitted Diseases. Horrible eating routine is another factor related with negative pregnancy as is the utilization of medications, liquor and smoking. The adolescent moms not just experience the ill effects of sick wellbeing and clinical dangers, yet in addition face mental issues which incorporate school interference, constrained professional chances, steady destitution, partition from the child’s father and on occasion rehashed pregnancies. Now and again if the school isn't intruded on, it brings about poor scholarly execution. â€Å"Teen moms are in mental peril since they experience more elevated levels of pressure, despair, sentiment of powerlessness, low confidence, a feeling of individual

What human issues form the subjects of the work Did you find any of them particularly well handled Essay Example

What human issues structure the subjects of the work? Did you discover any of them especially all around dealt with? Article The Sporting Spirit embodies senses, pride, appearances, patriotism, imagery, social character, and human inclinations as center issues that instigate the gravity of the article; â€Å"savage† impulses coagulate with patriotism and appearances to encourage one’s pride, representing the proudness of being marked by one’s nation †American, British, Russian, or something else. Pride cultivates ravenousness, which disinters the requirement for war †either truly or allegorically. Orwell passes on emblematic war in his article, The Sporting Spirit, delineating sports as a methods for a fight between observers, between two countries. It is where you either lose or win; there is no other option. â€Å"Sport is honestly impersonate warfare,† George Orwell says. Orwell addresses numerous human issues as subjects, however centers around contrasts of networks, onlookers, and countries to explain his supposition, adding to his credibility. In section seven, Orwell separates among urban and rural networks, and how they see sports. Sports give idealism to individuals in urban social orders †large towns †as an approach to meander from their stationary life. The expression of â€Å"sedentary† makes this atmosphere of inaction, which differentiates the subject of â€Å"savage† observers †onlookers who are vigorous to win through rough ways. Orwell even depicts the individuals who accept games unite countries as an advanced religion. This pessimistic utilization of â€Å"cult† †a gathering or an arrangement of strict conviction †depicts the dim cleverness Orwell uses to unpretentiously deride those perspectives. Did you discover any of them especially very much took care of? explicitly for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Recruit Writer The essay’s tone is instructional, convincing, and the peruser is lured by Orwell’s grouping as he advances from the typical perspectives, to explicit definitive perspectives and occasions that explain the honesty of his view; the peruser is to embrace Orwell’s sees †the stubborn author. Orwell addresses human issues of delineation in the initial two sections. He reveals what numerous â€Å"thinking† individuals have saved secret for such a long time †that game varieties hostility. Game animosity is a typical wonder these days; Orwell groups as â€Å"Dynamo,† â€Å"Russian,† or â€Å"British,† making the peruser intentional the marks onlookers use so as to relate to their group. The phrasing of Orwell †â€Å"†¦ I am told by someone,† and â€Å"†¦ another person advises me† †imply how his conclusion isn't kept to only him, yet rather that others share it also. Social distinguishing proof is on e of the key human issues passed on in the article. Orwell says that sports make new ill will on the two sides. The lingual authority of â€Å"animosity† depicts the detest of observers to each other as intense aversion reproduced from the ethics and contrasts of each other. This is one of the human issues Orwell can pass on magnificently. The announcement that sports make cooperative attitude between the countries is an incredible misnomer since it is sport that represents the serious idea of people and their requirement for characterization. People look for pride, and they love force and mastery. That is the reason sport is war †it is about the misfortune, just as the addition. (What one gains, the different loses.) Spectators can infer contrasts of races, nations, or political preferences as a gathering, and either boo the ref, or sing hostile melodies that debase the other group just as their onlookers to show their decisions. Orwell suggests that seriousness doesn't manufacture character. Best case scenario, it sells out it. Even from a pessimistic standpoint, it ruins it. It isn't only the players who are tainted; it is likewise the onlookers. The symbolism of a front line outline Orwell’s perspective on sport as a savage, rough movemen t where running, hopping, and kicking a ball are trial of national prudence. Great sportsmanship †trustworthiness, modesty, imperturbableness, regard, and gratefulness †is non-existent to Orwell. Orwell’s dishonest poignancy portrays how sports are illegitimately comprehended by many. Orwell likewise contacts, as I would like to think, on bullheadedness as opposed to nationalism. In sports, if a group loses, it is on purpose. Disregarding the purposes behind misfortune, and wildly accusing the arbitrator or the conditions is a type of numbness that is just appeared by an extremist †an individual who accepts that his nation is the sole best area, determinedly. Orwell can make the article with one human issue as a center: sport praises contrasts, it disparages adversaries, and dissolves the ethical character of its adherents.

The Effect Of Teenage Pregnancy On Children - 1636 Words

This study examined the effect of teenage pregnancy on children by exploring the results of an ADHD survey, ASRS-v1.1. The study sampled 100 kindergarten students, 50 had teenage mothers and 50 had mothers who gave birth during adulthood. A quantitative research method was utilized along with the difference-oriented research strategy approach. The independent variable is identified as the age of pregnancy and the two variant levels are: pregnant teens, ages 13-19, and pregnant women in adulthood, ages 25-35. The dependent variable is the extent of symptoms as indicated by the ASRS-V1.1 scale among the children. The results were used as an indicator of which set of kindergarteners is more likely to be at risk for ADHD; children with†¦show more content†¦More prominent than the biological differences of teen mothers versus that of adult mothers is the socioeconomic factors that tend to be present in teen pregnancy situations (AAP, 1999). These factors are identified and ag reed upon in many studies as; poverty, marital status, education level and prenatal care (AAP, 1999; Skoglund et. al., 2014; Fraser Ward, 1995 and Rothenberg, 1981). These factors have been proven to negatively affect any pregnancy regardless of the age of the mother (Ralitza, 2001). Ralitza et. al, (2001) study the effects of teenage pregnancy in relation to educational disabilities. It is found that there is little evidence to identify a link when all socioeconomic factors are controlled. On the other hand there is a confirmed link between smoking while pregnant and the onset of Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) (Ellis et, al., 2012). This study will only explore the onset of ADHD when considering educational disabilities. ADHD can be defined as a â€Å"neuro-developmental disorder that is characterized by impairment in the levels of attention, disorganization and/or hyperactivity impulsivity† (Ahmadi, 2012). It is stated that ADHD affects nearly five percent of our nation’s population of children (AAP, 1999). When considering the affects of AHDH to children, it is perceived that children with ADHD often have more social and emotional

Democracy and Political Theory-Free-Samples-Myassignmenthelp.com

Question: How does Lefort understand the formal distinction between monarchy (what he sometimes calls the ancient regime) and democracy? Answer: 1.Claude Lefort, a renowned philosopher of France was inspired by Cornelius Castoriadis and organised a communist conference in Paris in the year 1943. He was a professor of University at Sao Paulo and had introduced the theory of Totalitarian Enterprise (Lefort, 1988). He had made a difference in between the various stages of government and power. He has differentiated in between the democracy and monarchy. His theory of democracy is based on the concept of totalitarian and he has maintained the analysing process of USSR. He has characterised the concept of democracy as institutional conflict of the society and his concept of democracy has recognised the legitimate existence of divergent interest (Gashkov Rubtsova, 2017). According to Lefort, the power should not be confined in any specific individual, but it should be regularised and the people should get the option to elect their representative who will regulate the law for the interest of public. The concept of democracy has bee n introduced by this idea. He had raised his voice against the monarchical power and was of the view that the power should be confined in the hands of the majority. According to Dominique Colas, power comes from the people and belongs to no one." Lefort has considered democracy as beginning of a new era and accept modern as well as representative democracy but did not support the limited scope of democracy (Howard, 2016). He had pointed out certain characteristics of monarchy too and according to him, in the monarchical system, power has been confined in the hand of the king. Here the term power does not denote unlimited power. King was a mediator between God and mortals and work for the sovereignty of justice. The power of the king is unconditional and the people have no right to interfere in the power of the monarchy (Lefort, 2016). These statements made both the term different from their eternal meaning and power. In a democratic society, there is always a claim to understand the organisational law and development has been made and power does not limited in ones hand. However, in monarchical system, there is no concept of distribution of power. King holds the supreme power. This theory of democracy has helped to identify the modern feature and concept of democracy. The concept of the locus of power becomes an empty place and its implication: The term locus of power means psychological criteria that have been built in the mind of common people and they thought they have control over the events related to their life. This is a fundamental theory of democracy as the theory of democracy is based on the concept of power of the common people where the people will choose the members who will represent their necessities and legal protection (Breaugh et al., 2015). Lefort did not stated about the institution of power; he had support the nature and character of power. According to his view, if the power has been institutionalised, it will prevent the government to apply the power appropriately. Considering the nature of the monarchical power, he has stated that the locus of power becomes an empty place as people have no control over the power. Through his concept of democracy he has symbolises the impact of power in the society (Nsstrm, 2015). The concept of Lefort has certain implications on the modern democracy. The doctrine of separation of power was an essential character of democracy and according to Lefort, power should not be confined in the hand of an individual (Lefort, 1988). People should get the right to choose representative in order to secure them from any situation. Lefort did not support the concept of institution; according to him, the power should be free in nature. However, there are certain complexities in his theory. He has not clarified his statement on totalitarianism. He was against the confinement of power, but had not mentioned any specific types of democracy. However, the concept of modern democracy has been come from his idea and he has supported the idea of separation of power. He is also the known father of Maria Clara. In the novel, it is said that Capitan Tiago is the richest man in the region of Binondo and he possessed real properties in Pampanga and Laguna de Bay. He is also said to be a good Catholic, friend of the Spanish government and was considered as a Spanish by colonialists. Damaso Verdolagas, or Padre Damaso is a Franciscan friar and former parish curate of San Diego. He is best known as a notorious character that speaks with harsh words and has been a cruel priest during his stay in the town. At the end of the novel, he again re-assigned into a distant town and was found dead one day. In popular culture, when a priest was said to be like Padre Damaso, it means that he is a cruel but respectable individual. When one says a child is anak ni Padre Damaso (child of Padre Damaso), it means that the childs fathers identity is unknown. Filosofo Tacio, known by his Filipinized name Pilosopong Tasyo is another major character in the story. Seeking for reforms from the government, he expresses his ideals in paper written in a cryptographic alphabet similar from hieroglyphs and Coptic figures[13] hoping that the future generations may be able to decipher it and realized the abuse and oppression done by the conquerors. [15] He wants to revolutionize the country and to be freed from Spanish oppression. The 50th chapter of the novel explores the past of Elias and history of his family. In the past, Ibarras grandfather condemned Elias grandfather of burning a warehouse which lead into the misfortune of Elias family. His father was refused to be married by his mother because his fathers past and family lineage was discovered by his mothers family. In the long run, Elias and his twin sister was raised by their maternal grandfather. When they were teenagers, their distant relatives called them hijo de bastardo or illegitimate children. One day, his sister disappeared which led him to search for her. His search led him into different places, and finally, he became a fugitive and anti-government. Dona Victorina de Espadana, commonly known as Dona Victorina, is an ambitious Filipino woman who classifies herself as a Spanish and mimicking Spanish ladies by putting on heavy make-ups. The novel narrates Dona Victorinas younger days: she had lots of admirers but she never choose one of them because nobody was a Spaniard. Later on, she met Don Tiburcio de Espadana, an official to the customs bureau, which is about ten years junior than her. [18] Even though she got married, they never had a child. Her husband assumes the title as medical doctor even though Tiburcio never attended medical school. Using fake documents and certificates, Tiburcio is practicing illegal medicine. The usage of Tiburcio of the title Dr. also made Victorina to assume the title Dra. (doctora, female doctor). [18] Apparently, she uses the whole name Dona Victorina de los Reyes de de Espadana, with double de to emphasize her marriage surname. 2. Noli Me Tangere and Spanish Period in the Philippines Noli Me Tangere was Rizals first novel. He was 26 years old at the time of ts publication. The work was has been historically significant and was instrumental in the establishing of the Filipino sense of national identity. The book indirectly influenced a revolution although the author actually advocated direct representation to the Spanish government and larger role of the Philippines within Spains political affairs. The novel was written in Spanish, the official language of the colony that was understood by j ust about everyone thanks to the free public education system established by the Spanish government more than two decades before. The novel created so much controversy that only a few days after his arrival, Governor-General Emilio Terrero summoned Rizal to the Malacanang Palace and told him of the charges saying that Noli Me Tangere contained subversive statements. After a discussion, the liberal[citation needed] Governor General was appeased, but mentioned that he was unable to offer resistance against the pressure of the Church to take action against the book. The persecution can be discerned from Rizals letter to Leitmeritz: My book made a lot of noise; everywhere, I am asked about it. They wanted to anathematize me [to excommunicate me] because of it I am considered a German spy, an agent of Bismarck, they say I am a Protestant, a freemason, a sorcerer, a damned soul and evil. It is whispered that I want to draw plans, that I have a foreign passport and that I wander through the streets by night Rizal depiction of nationality by emphasizing the qualities of Filipinos: devotion of a Filipina and her influence to a mans life, the deep sense of gratitude, and the solid common sense of the Filipinos under the Spanish regime. The book was instrumental in creating a unified Filipino national identity and consciousness, as many Filipinos previously identified with their respective regions to the advantage of the Spanish authorities. It lampooned, caricatured and exposed various elements in colonial society. 3. Rizal’s Reasons for Coming Back to the Philippines During his five years absence from the Philippines Rizal had been receiving many letters from his brother Paciano, from his sisters Olimpia, Narcisa, Josefa, Maria, Saturnina, Lucia and her husband Mariano Herbosa, from his mother, and from friends in the Philippines. Hardly had he reached Spain when his friends wrote that a terrible epidemic of cholera was sweeping away thousands of victims in and near Manila. As letters concerning this scourge reached Rizal, they made his sensitive heart yearn to go to their relief. Joses father did not write any letters, but he sent word at every opportunity to say how proud he was of his sons achievements. And his mother, Paciano told him, burst into tears as she read his letters. Jose had taken Pacianos advice and written them only the news that would make them happy. What made Rizal most heartsick was to read how his father was having trouble with the Dominican friars who claimed his land, while the price of sugar was so low that the family nearly faced ruin. The third year Jose was strongly inclined to return, at least as far as Hong Kong, but Paciano urged him to stay away; and his friend Felipe Zamora told him never to come back until he had changed his nationality to German, English, or American, then the Spanish government would not dare to touch him. (01) After Noli Me Tangere had been printed and smuggled into the Philippines, Jose M. Cecilio (02) begged Rizal not to come back to the Islands for at least a year. We will wait and see what effect your book will produce. We are not now going to lose all the good of your brilliant career. We are doing all we can to make your book known; all who have read it are enthusiastic. But you stay there. I will write when you ought to come, as you believe, on account of your mother. He referred to the cataracts in Rizals mothers eyes; he had been preparing ever since 1882 five long years to save her sight. Another cause for many a heartache was the fact that after 1884 he did not receive letters from Leonor Rivera, (who always signed herself Faimis) but he did receive alarming news about her. In March of that year he learned from his friend Jose M. Cecilio that Leonors mother was opposed to her marrying Rizal. In truth, dear namesake, wrote Cecilio, this girl week by week is sick with fever, and it is, as you well know, the result of the ardent passion she feels for you. 4. Propagandas Against Noli Me Tangere Criticism and attacks against the Noli and its author came from all quarters. An anonymous letter signed A Friar and sent to Rizal, dated February 15, 1888, says in part: How ungrateful you are†¦ If you, or for that matter all your men, think you have a grievance, then challenge us and we shall pick up the gauntlet, for we are not cowards like you, which is not to say that a hidden hand will not put an end to your life. A special committee of the faculty of the University of Santo Tomas, at the request of the Archbishop Pedro Payo, found and condemned the novel as heretical, impious, and scandalous in its religious aspect, and unpatriotic, subversive of public order and harmful to the Spanish government and its administration of theses islands in its political aspect. On December 28, 1887, Fray Salvador Font, the cura of Tondo and chairman of the Permanent Commission of Censorship composed of laymen and ordered that the circulation of this pernicious book be absolutely prohibited. Not content, Font caused the circulation of copies of the prohibition, an act which brought an effect contrary to what he desired. Instead of what he expected, the negative publicity awakened more the curiosity of the people who managed to get copies of the book. Assisting Father Font in his aim to discredit the Noli was an Augustinian friar by the name of Jose Rodriguez. In a pamphlet entitled Caiingat Cayo (Beware). Fr. Rodriguez warned the people that in reading the book they commit mortal sin, considering that it was full of heresy. As far as Madrid, there was furor over the Noli, as evidenced by an article which bitterly criticized the novel published in a Madrid newspaper in January, 1890, and written by one Vicente Barrantes. In like manner, a member of the Senate in the Spanish Cortes assailed the novel as anti-Catholic, Protestant, socialistic. It is well to note that not detractors alone visibly reacted to the effects of the Noli. For if there were bitter critics, another group composed of staunch defenders found every reason to justify its publication and circulation to the greatest number of Filipinos. For instance, Marcelo H. Del Pilar, cleverly writing under an assumed name Dolores Manapat, successfully circulated a publication that negated the effect of Father Rodriguez’ Caiingat Cayo, Del Pilar’s piece was entitled Caiigat Cayo (Be Slippery as an Eel). Deceiving similar in format to Rodriguez’ Caiingat Cayo, the people were readily misled into getting not a copy o Rodriguez’ piece but Del Pillar’s. The Noli Me Tangere found another staunch defender in the person of a Catholic theologian of the Manila Cathedral, in Father Vicente Garcia. Under the pen-name Justo Desiderio Magalang. Father Garcia wrote a very scholarly defense of the Noli, claiming among other things that Rizal cannot be an ignorant man, being the product of Spanish officials and corrupt friars; he himself who had warned the people of committing mortal sin if they read the novel had therefore committed such sin for he has read the novel. Consequently, realizing how much the Noli had awakened his countrymen, to the point of defending his novel, Rizal said: Now I die content. Fittingly, Rizal found it a timely and effective gesture to dedicate his novel to the country of his people whose experiences and sufferings he wrote about, sufferings which he brought to light in an effort to awaken his countrymen to the truths that had long remained unspoken, although not totally unheard of. 5. Out of the Country†¦Again. On February 28, 1888, a year after the publication of Noli Me Tangere, and six months after his arrival in the Philippines, Jose Rizal sailed from Manila again, by advice of the government. The letters he wrote back home show how his heart ached at going, yet his judgment told him that it was best for him to go. The phenomenal effect of Noli Me Tangere made it clear that Rizal could wield a mighty influence through his pen, but to write the truth he would have to go to some country where he would be free from spies or plots. The spot he chose was the Library of the British Museum, the greatest library in the world.

Deaf Dance - The School for the Deaf essays

Deaf Dance - The School for the Deaf essays Imagine feeling music instead of hearing it. Imagine knowing each beat, each quarter note, each word without ever hearing a sound (Griver). Could you dance in time, in rhythm to a song if you've never heard it? The thought seems nearly impossible for those who have their hearing. I have most of my hearing, and I could never do any of this. I blame it on an inner ear problem that affects my balance, but I truly think that some people are gifted in various arts. There are people out there that were meant to dance, as luck would have it, they ended up deaf, but they were still meant to dance. In the early years, an interpreter was provided for signed translation of music during school productions. Later, a song was requested which did not lend itself to a sign language interpretation (Johnson). Instead, it was danced, and a new art form was born. Inspired by a vision of integration between deaf and hearing cultures, it uses visual language, the basis of deaf culture, and fuses that with expressive dance and live music (The Company). Almost every School for the Deaf has a dance program. The only ones that don't are only because of budget dilemmas. Gallaudet University is the most famous of deaf institutions. The story of Gallaudet Dance Company begins in 1955 when Dr. Peter Wisher, a professor in the Department of Physical Education, observed a student signing "The Lord's Prayer" during a campus ceremony. Impressed by the beauty and movement of the signs, he saw the possibility of using signs as a foundation for dance movement. He invited interested students to a meeting to explore this possibility. At first, this was not a performing company but rather a recreational activity. Students got together two or three times a week for an hour of fun and social enjoyment. Word of the club spread, and the group began to be asked to perform- both on and off campus (Hottendorf). Besides, what is Dance anyway? It is an art form ...

Basic Rhetorical Analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Basic Rhetorical Analysis - Essay Example It appears also to be aimed at student groups who enter science fairs and competitions and could be particularly valuable for summer schools and extension work after class time. When reviewing this book I examined it from three specific angles: the presentation, the academic content, and the use of language. I also considered its overall strengths and weaknesses, and this three part analysis followed by evaluation is the structure I have chosen for this memo. The first point to note about this booklet is that it is available in electronic form, which makes it very convenient as a resource for teachers. It can be printed off for use in class, or alternatively it can be projected on to a screen or uploaded on to an educational network. The visual presentation is clearly aimed at a younger audience. The print is large, and there are at most two or three paragraphs of main text per page. The running head at the top of each page reminds the reader of the main topic which is â€Å"Science Fair Fun.† Section headings are in very large and bold type, while subheadings are smaller and underlined. The text comes with contents page, page numbers, main text, glossary and a list of resources for further information. This format resembles a standard project structure, and so it appears that the authors of this booklet wanted to set an example to the students in how to present information in a project report style. There are frequent illustrations which range from photographs to graphs and charts. There are also boxed areas which present key pieces of advice and useful checklists. Some of this material is layered, in magazine style and some of it is more like a web page with large colored icons. These features add interest to the booklet, and encourage students who may have weaker reading skills to persevere with the text and gain clues to its meaning from the illustrations. The use of color is interesting because it is mainly confined to the primary colors, in rather pastel shades. This may be an attempt to present a visual impression which is both attractive and serious at the same time. Too much bright color can make a text appear infantile and so this subtle coloring is a good compromise. The content of the booklet is both factual and persuasive. The factual information is all related to basic scientific terms such as â€Å"hypothesis† and â€Å"experiment.† The emphasis is on developing an awareness of scientific methods and following the steps of hypothesis formation, project design, data collection and writing up results in such a way as to come to some conclusion. There are clear instructions on how to approach each of these stages. This part of the text is rather abstract and it may be that some weaker students would find it had to follow. There is information also on how to present the project verbally, and on what the judges are looking for in a project. The second part of the booklet describes a number of previous projec ts that have been completed and this information is much more concrete. These short summaries put the theoretical terms and theories into practice, and this provides students with the opportunity to see the terms being used in actions, and a number of models on which they can build their own ideas. The glossary provides clarification on the scientific meanings of the words used, and this could be used both as preparation for study, and as a revision

The French Revolution :: essays research papers

The French Revolution was an unstable, blood-filled time. With 20,000 sent to the guillotine and an equal number to prison, it is not hard to find importance but rather to find meaning. The most crucial thing to look for in the revolution is justification, reasons that excuse or bring significance to the deaths of many. John Locke, a philosophe of the time, may have argued that a leader who does not provide his people with inalienable rights is grounds for dismissal in the form of regicide1. On the other hand Thomas Hobbes, also a philosopher, may have taken a different argument. It was his belief that ‘man is a brute’, therefore he needs a dictator to keep the peace. John Locke’s idealistic view point if practiced properly could have provided the lower class of France with equality, something the were desperately in need of. The Thomas Hobbes approach which advocates control, could not have provided the people with such liberation, but in theory should be able to maintain the peace among the people, the peace that seemed so lacking during the French Revolution. The French Revolution was a disaster for the following reasons: it happened too fast, it went too far, and it achieved too little.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Thomas Paine a radical thinker of the era once said ‘Time makes more converts than reason’. With this quote we can see why revolution was successful in England, but not France. England slowly used the Magna Carta (1213), Petition of Rights (1628), and the Habeas Corpus Act (1679) to limit it’s monarch. It was a long road that was by no means perfect. With monarchs who paid little attention to the act(s) in place during their reign and parliament, like James (1603-1625) and Charles I (1625-1649) it was hard to see progress quickly. These acts played a vital role in Britain’s journey to democracy, through them came proper representation of the people, equality, and what is now known as the ‘Glorious Revolution’.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  France seemed to be on it’s way to a similar fate. In 1789, the Estates-General2 had now received a promise of a head count from Louis XVI. Prior to this time the very large third estate3 (26 million) had the same number of representatives in the Estates-General as the first estate4 (100,000) and the second estate5 (400,000) combined. Once the Estates-General had been renamed the National Assembly by the third estate a constitution was in the works. During this time the people of France became restless, food shortages plagued the country side. It also appeared that Louis XVI might dissolve

New World Order: Impacts in Terms on Global Cooperation

As the Cold War between US and USSR reached to an end, the world witnessed a shift from bilateral to unilateral nature of power. In 1991, President Bush inoculated the concept of New World Order which aimed to increase the international collaboration, collective security, globalization, interdependence, authority and achievement of common goals. All the impacts of New World Order directly or indirectly left their marks on the nature of cooperation among nations. This paper, after succinctly introducing the concept of New World Order in general, aims to discuss the Bush Administration’s version of New World Order. The paper discusses the impacts of New World Order’s implementation in terms of cooperation among the states and later discusses its negative corollaries. After providing a critique of the established viewpoints about the impacts of New World Order, the paper ends by drawing a conclusion in favour of the concerned system as the only viable solution if internatio nal peace and security is to be achieved. Introduction Although New World Order is not a novel concept, it is often misinterpreted as one. It is largely because of various transformational phases the system has gone through ever since its inoculation. However, differences among its versions have existed. These differences are more evident due to the changing circumstances in which these versions were established. As the New World Order aimed to provide amelioration in the prevailing system, its guiding principles have varied from time to time. Giddens believes that the direct corollaries of these changes appear in the shape of forces like globalization, individualism and political agency etc (Pillay & Elliot, 2001, p. 8&9). Before analyzing the implications of New World Order in terms of cooperation across the world, it is mandatory to create a sufficient understanding of the concept.New World Order is an abstract concept that attempts to create a better world. Therefore its contents may vary from time to time based on the situation and the nature of paradigm shift required. New World Order and the United States: In the history of the United States, the term ‘New World Order’ was first introduced by Woodrow Wilson after the World War I. Marked by idealism, the concept did no prevail long. After the World War II, Franklin D. Roosevelt attempted to establish the concept by making possible increasing role of international bodies like United Nations for the attainment of peace which never reached pragmatism. Both these versions of New World Order remained transient up until 1991 when President George H. W. Bush introduced the term at the time of Gulf War which marked the characteristics of post cold war era. Bush’s idea behind new world order included the abandonment of aggression against nations, collective security to guard against the aggression and increases collaboration of nations to meet such peace creating goals (Miller and Yetiv 56). Bef ore 1991, the New World Order only existed as an abstract concept.President Bush perpetuated it in the international politics (Yovanovish 3) which was practically implemented in case of the Iraq’s war with Kuwait. Concept of New World Order in the Light of Bush Administration What Bush Administration implied by New World Order was fairly divergent from the preceding concepts addresses by the other US presidents. In a nut shell, the major components of President Bush’s New World Order can be reckoned in the following except from his speech, â€Å"a new era-freer from the threat of terror, stronger in the pursuit of justice, and more secure in the quest for peace. An era in which thenations of the world, East and West, North and South, can prosper and live in harmony †¦ a world where the rule of law supplants the rule of the jungle †¦ where the strong respect the rights of the weak† (Miller and Yetiv 56). The concerned statement passed in 1991 provide an unequivocal agenda of New World Order that included peace creation, global prosperity and a rule of law to control the world. The other aspects introduced by President George H. W. Bush included interdepence, collective security, collective action, international authorities and globalization etc. Positive Impacts of New World Order in Terms of International CooperationThe New World Order has played dual role in bringing the phase of transformation. On a positive side, establishment of this order and the end of cold war removed the threat of nuclear havoc. Similarly, the state governments shifted to a mutual problem solving approach as a result of increasing dependency arriving from globalization. Such corollaries are evident in events like General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade and North American Free Trade Agreement etc (Hauss 2&3). Interdependence The end of cold war and the collapse of Soviet Union led to a unipolar environment in the world politics. As the balance of power distu rbed , the New World Order inoculated a system of interdependence providing equal opportunities for all the states by advocating the dependence of nations on one another. Related to interdependence is the preference of common interests to state interests that was addressed by the new system (Kessler 53). Therefore, the New World Order suppressed national sovereignty in favour of international authority. Cooperation To increase interdependence and through the work of international bodies, the concept of Free Trade emerged as a product of New World Order. With the lifting of trade barriers as a result of Free Trade policy, increasing flow of technology across borders, individuals from different countries are crossing their borders to enter into the other countries to hunt for opportunities and are constantly being exposed to the foreign cultures and issues. This trend has started diminishing the borders between nations thereby threatening the concept of statehood. As a result ‘gr eater economic and social interdependence seem to affect national decision-making’ thereby making the concept of state obsolete (Bertucci & Alberti, p.9). However, the whole process served to achieve an important goal of New World Order which was to increase cooperation between the nations. On social grounds, the emergence of English language as a lingua franca is largely a corollary of the New World Order. Although widely criticised to have caused languages deaths, the very transformation has brought an aspect of cooperation among the contemporary nations by providing a same medium of communication thereby enhancing better understanding (Bandura 6). International BodiesAs the interdependence among nations increased and the international bodies were given higher levels of authority, the New World Order triggered a transformation in the role of state in terms of sovereignty. The states in post cold war era experienced debilitating sovereignty as it is supplanted by the interna tional authority of the bodies like United Nations. In terms of cooperation, this shift provided better chances of cooperation by providing a rule of law and peace keeping environment for all the nations.Implementing a just supreme authority like UN above all the nations was aimed to motivate the nations in thinking globally rather than locally. The increasing role of United Nations in the New World Order was also because in the preceding times of cold war, the authority of UN remained nearly impossible because of the conflicting super powers of US and USSR. Empowering such international bodies by New World Order was aimed to protect the interests of both the strong and weak nations alike in order to maintain justice for peace and cooperation. The very fact was accentuated by Former UN Secretary-General Sir Brian Urquhart who said, â€Å"It is no longer acceptable that international action is taken only when a situation threatens the interests of the most powerful nations. † ( Holmes). Such International bodies are of varied types. One such example in economic world is that of World Trade Organization. World trade organization as a key instrument of New World Order has been using uniform trade policies for all the nations participating in the international economic trade. The developing countries are rising as a result of free trade. For the very reason the share of developing countries in global trade market increased. Consequently, on economic grounds the stronger states like US are as much dependent on the relatively weaker nations as they are on the former. Collective Security To ensure collective security, the New World Order proposed a rule of law. It also led to the UN resolution that prohibited invasions as a way of practicing aggression against other nations. In order to make possible this collective security and maintain absence of invasions, US used force against Iraq to withdraw its forces from Kuwait. The very concept of collective security led to the UN forces to aid the weaker nations during the times of war. Although providing a great scope of amelioration, the New World Order also implies certain threats arising due to the increased collaboration and globalization. Such threats include the transcendence of national boundaries, increased nuclear proliferation and the intermingled and inseparable nature of problems facing the world etc (Hauss 5). Globalization As perceived by Waters, â€Å"If globalisation in its most complete sense takes effect then the nation-state will be its chief victim (Shaneland). †With the positive picture of new world order to have catalyzed the process of globalization, authors like John Mc Murtry also throw light on the hidden threats of such apparently favourable changes. The author goes on to consider new world order a global coup d’etat which encourages oligopolistic trade in the name of international free market (Gordana 23). According to the paper â€Å"Is there a future f or the nation-state in an era of globalisation? If so, what future? † provided by Shaneland, there are three basic challenges that the nations are to face as a result of global development shaped by rapid globalization. These include (a) a reduced ability of the state to exert influence on its economy in the times when economic transactions are increasingly taking place on a global level which is considerably due to the trend of free trade; (b) an augmentation of trans-national bodies. These bodies are political (for instance the UN), economic (like NAFTA), a combination of the two (like the EU) and even the Non Governmental Organizations and (c) the establishment of global ruling organizations.Often termed as the super-national and sub-national centres of power, they include bodies like United Nations. The same author believes that in such a scenario the role of state has shifted from being the ‘primary unit of international relations to being a provider of public goods and infrastructure to global businesses’. International Bodies Many analysts propose the existence of a global authorities leads to the process of ruling the nations by meddling in the state affairs. The instruments of such a global authority are considered to be the present world’s organizations. This means that at one hand the states are losing their role within their territories and at the other hand they are not having a considerable role in the global community (Shaneland). Nuclear Proliferation Increased cooperation and ties between nations have resulted in increased nuclear proliferation. Previously held by only a single state, many of the contemporary states are now armed with nuclear weapons which pose a constant threat to the world peace and security. A war raged in such a scenario would lead to massive destruction. New World Order – A Critique:Many aspects of the New World Order are criticized for their contrary hidden implications. Joseph Nye argues t hat the interdependence suggested by New World Order is multilevel in nature. By the term ‘multilevel interdependence’, Nye suggests the idea of multiple layers in terms of distribution of power where one layer may have bipolar structure while the other sustains a unipolar structure. The most crucial of this layer is that of military power which is clearly unipolar in favour of the US. The second is the economic layer which although tripolar still has US as a major sharer. In fact it is only the third and last layer of interdependence that shows lack of concentrated power in favour of any strong country like US (Kessler 54). According to Marguerite K. Rivage-Seul and D. Michael Rivage-Seul, the New World Order is in itself a threat to the poor states and thus a strategy used by the stronger nations like US. This might result in a third world war against the weaker nations (1). Such an assumption is based on the increasing vulnerability of weaker nations as a result of in ternational authority. For instance, to survive in the global economic competition, the weaker nations require larger investments than they can afford. Loans from organizations like International Monitory Fund increase the vulnerability of such nations. Such a threat is not faced by the stronger nations. Conclusion Every phenomenon has its differential dimensions. So is the case with the new world order. However, the importance of it in terms of increasing interdependence and cooperation cannot be denied. As an alternate course of action, if the New World Order is to be replaced, the success of the system would require benignity which in turn demands an extra ordinary amount of change on the part of the human (Hauss 4). To dwell in such an idea of change would rather be utopianism than rationalism. In short, the merits of New World Order greatly supersede its demerits thereby making it the most viable international system for the cooperation and peace creation among the nations in the contemporary world.
